Douglass
Freed's paintings reflect the ambiance of place as it combines
with the mood of the painter. His inspiration comes from the region
in Missouri where he has lived for over 30 years, and through
his travels throughout the world. Freed hasn't always painted
from life. He has had a long distinguished career as a minimalist
color-field painter. As an art student, Freed realized his talent
at drawing realistically. This gift made him feel like "a slave
to the subject."
Freed moved
into the spiritual driven nonobjective style of Abstract Expressionism.
His work consisted of interlocking geometric patterns painted
with beautiful color and light. After years of painting in this
vein, Freed began to see references to landscape in these works,
treetops, clouds, and water. The paintings we see today are the
integration of the abstract and the representational style. He
captures the mystical light found in natural atmosphere, the haze
in the distance on summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies,
the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood
of approaching darkness. Freed's work is in many museums, corporate
and private collections and he has achieved honors and awards
throughout his career.
Douglass Freed's
intent is to create paintings imbued with a quiet meditative spiritual
presence suggesting issues about time and ecology.
